Is It Better To Replace Or Repair A Broken Washing Machine?

To Replace Or Repair… That Is The Question.

When a washing machine breaks down most of our initial thoughts are drawn to ‘i’ll have to go and buy a new one’ however you do have another option that we forget about.. repair it!

One key thing that affects your decision is money. How much will a new one cost? How much will a repair cost? Repairs can completely depend on what is wrong with the machine, and there are rare occasions where the washing machine just simply isn’t worth getting repaired. Things such as bearings replacements can cost you more than the machine is worth. On the other hand, the majority of machines are quite cheap to repair and are a lot more cost-effective than buying new. The best way to find out if it is worth getting repaired would to firstly call out an engineer to have a look at the machine for you. (Click here for our washing machine repair contact details)

Did you know: In 2014 leading brands such as Bosch, AEG, Beko, Indesit, Hotpoint and Zanussi changed the design of their washing machines to make them easier to be repaired, this was due to experts saying that top brands had made their machines almost impossible to be repaired in a bid to force customers to buy a new machine from them.

Which? said that washing machines bearings, which are a key part of the machines, were being sealed away so that repairmen could not access them. Experts compared the newer machines to washing machines that were made in the 1980s and 1990s and found that the older machines were easier to repair.

In 2012 WRAP found that 41% of people had replaced washing machines that had broken down within 6 years. This all contributes to the increasing amount of e-waste that is being disposed of. On average 20 to 50 million metric tons of e-waste are disposed of worldwide every year.

In summary, we would always recommend getting your appliance repaired instead of replaced as it is better for both your wallet and the planet.
